Minecraft Spear: Everything You Need to Know

In today’s post, we are going to talk about the latest weapon in Minecraft, i.e, the Minecraft Spear. We will go through how to craft the spear, use the spear, and the best enchantment you can apply to the spear.

How to craft a Minecraft Spear

To craft a spear, open a crafting table and place two sticks diagonally (one in the bottom-left slot, one in the middle slot) and your chosen material (e.g., wood planks, stone, copper, iron ingot, gold ingot, or diamond) in the top-right slot. This diagonal pattern yields a spear. Obtaining the Spear

Besides crafting, spears can be obtained by looting or finding them in-world. Various hostile mobs can spawn, wielding spears. For example, Zombies, Husks, Camel Husk Skeletons (husks riding camels), and Zombie Horsemen often spawn holding iron spears, while Piglins and Zombified Piglins will spawn with golden spears. (Piglins even prefer gold spears) When you kill these mobs, they drop the spear.

Spears can also be found in loot chests: ocean ruins may contain stone spears, buried treasure and village armorer/armsmith chests may hold iron (or copper) spears, and Bastion Remnants or End Cities can contain diamond spears. This means you can sometimes find a high-tier spear in dungeon loot.

Using the Spear in Combat

The spear adds new attack options to Minecraft’s arsenal. Its default (jab) attack is a quick thrust, similar to a sword swing. The secondary charge attack (hold right-click to charge, then release) delivers a much stronger thrust. A well-timed charge can deal heavy damage and even knock a mounted foe off its horse or camel. Spears also have an extended reach – roughly 4.5 blocks (compared to about 3 blocks for swords) – so you can safely poke enemies from farther away.

Minecraft players riding horses, each wielding a spear for combat. Because of this long reach, spears are especially powerful on mounts or when combined with mobility. You can use a spear while riding any mount (horse, camel, or even the new nautilus mob) to keep distance from enemies. Best Enchantments for the Spear

You can use all the same enchantments of a sword (Sharpness, Smite, Fire Aspect, Knockback, Looting, Unbreaking, Mending, etc.) to enchant the spear, except Sweeping Edge. In practice, good enchantment choices include Sharpness (for extra damage), Smite (bonus vs undead), Fire Aspect (sets targets ablaze), Looting (better drops), and Unbreaking/Mending for durability. The spear’s Lunge enchantment is unique to it: Lunge powers up your jab attack by propelling you forward (at the cost of extra durability). This makes you even more mobile in a fight. In short, mix standard melee enchants (Sharpness, etc.) with Lunge to get the most out of your spear.
